Cranial-Sacral Therapy

Cranial-sacral therapy is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a

physiological body system called the cranial-sacral system - comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.

This work is an evolution out of Cranial Osteopathy, a specialization of the osteopathic profession that was introduced to the world in the 1930s by an American osteopath and visionary called William Garner Sutherland.  The work has traditionally focused on the 22 bones that make up the human head, the vertebra and sacrum, and also on the brain, the central nervous system, the cerebrospinal fluid and the system of membranes inside the cranium and spinal column.

Cranial-sacral therapists focus on optimizing the position, fluid movement and energy of all parts of the cranial-sacral system.  There are many schools of cranial-sacral work.  I have studied this work with two osteopaths, Dr. Jean Pierre Barral, creator of Visceral Manipulation and Dr. Hugh Milne, founder of Visionary Cranial-sacral Work.

The VIsionary approach teaches the practitioner to be of service to people by seeing them clearly, sensing where they need to be touched, and balancing the cranial-sacral system to the entire body. Dr. Milne studied Osteopathy in England and later was drawn to further work with a variety of healers, including the renowned Dr. Robert Fulford, an Osteopath and protege of Dr. Sutherland.

By complementing the body's natural healing processes, cranial-sacral therapy is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction, including:

        •Migraine Headaches
        •Central Nervous System Disorders
•Traumatic Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries
        •Chronic Neck and Back Pain
        •Learning Disabilities
        •Chronic Fatigue
        •Emotional Difficulties
        •Stress and Tension-Related Problems
        •Fibromyalgia and other Connective-Tissue Disorders
        •Temperomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)
        •Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
        •Post-Surgical Dysfunction

A cranial-sacral session can often provide access for the client into their inner selves, resulting in a deep relaxation and harmonizing of the physical and emotional realms.  It is a way of releasing deeply held restrictions in a safe way that is natural, easy and does not involve examination or re-living of past injuries or traumas.

In my Rolfing practice, I sometimes use cranial-sacral methods to facilitate access to the structural tissues.  This is usually a small part of a Rolfing session, but one that is often helpful in opening the client’s tissue to the work that lies ahead.  Clients can also receive separate sessions, where the work is entirely focused on the cranial-sacral system.  Cranial-sacral sessions are 90 minutes and cost $120.
